Refrigerated Trailer Insurance Provided By Our Agency

Reefer trailers are commonly used in trucking for shipping cargo that requires special conditions, namely maintaining a temperature level. Typically, reefer trailers ship freight such as produce and food for retail and other businesses. Having such a trailer can be very profitable, but it is important to protect it with reliable coverage.

What’s a Refrigerated Trailer (Reefer)?

A refrigerated or ‘reefer’ trailer has a refrigeration unit at the front which can heat or cool the load depending on the ambient temperature. It allows for temperature-sensitive goods to be transported long distances. In some parts of Australia, temperatures can range from freezing point to +40 Celsius in a matter of a few hours. Transporting temperature-sensitive produce such as strawberries requires a vehicle that can maintain a temperature within a 3-4-degree range for a long period of time. Reefers can be semi trailers, b-doubles, pull trailers, containers or trucks. All that’s needed is a chiller unit to cool an area that’s loaded. It’s easier to cool a white reefer than a black reefer; heat transfer through the body is one of the major considerations when transporting sensitive loads.

Coverage you need for your Refrigerated Trailer

Insurance policies for refrigerated goods transport often contain significant gaps in coverage, such as a total exclusion or sublimit for “high-risk” commodities (seafood, for example). A comprehensive reefer truck insurance policy should account for all classifications of cargo being transported on a regular basis and will contain the following cargo and physical damage coverages:

  • Reefer Breakdown – provides coverage for cargo loss caused by the mechanical or electrical breakdown or malfunction of a temperature control system.
  • Loading & Unloading – provides coverage for the commodity while it is being loaded or unloaded.
  • Debris Removal – provides coverage for reasonable and necessary costs to remove debris caused by and resulting from a covered loss.
  • Broadened Pollution – provides coverage for the discharge of pollutants which are in, upon, owned, being transported by, loaded or unloaded from a covered auto.
  • Earned Freight – replaces income lost when a load cannot be delivered due to a covered cargo loss.
  • Sue and Labor – covers costs related to preventing further loss to damaged cargo. Also known as loss mitigation.
  • Collision and Comprehensive – to protect your tractor, trailer and the refrigerated unit for collision, fire, theft, vandalism and other causes of loss
  • Towing and Storage – provides coverage for expenses related to towing and storage of a damaged equipment
  • Combined Deductibles – this coverage allows you to pay only one deductible in the event a loss occurs involving both physical damage and cargo.

Does My Fleet Need Refrigeration Truck Insurance?

Reefers are a critical aspect of commercial transportation. They extend the shelf life of products, help reduce waste, and facilitate freight management in terms of both quality and safety. Refrigeration truck insurance protects vehicles and their contents during every part of the transportation journey. If your fleet employs temperature-controlled trailers to haul perishable or sensitive shipments, you need the specialized coverage only refrigeration truck insurance can deliver. This insurance includes:

  • General Liability
  • Commercial Auto Liability
  • Motor Truck Cargo
  • Reefer Breakdown coverage.

With these insurance products forming a blanket of security over your fleet operations, owners can continue to provide necessary transportation services for temperature-sensitive freight.

Already have Captive Insurance? Switching is easy

It might be time to switch insurers whenever the service that your existing insurer provides doesn’t meet your needs. For example, if you have a poor claims experience or an unexplained rate increase, it might be time to consider other options

If you cancel a previous policy before a new policy is effective, you could run into some serious financial problems.
